This past Saturday, the MTC youth had the unique opportunity to visit the mosque at the Islamic Cultural Center of New York. The imam sat down with us in the main prayer hall to teach us about the mosque and Islam in general and to answer our questions. It was a wonderful experience to learn about the faith and devotion of our Muslim brothers and sisters in this beautiful setting.
We found a lot to love and admire in Islam. Their devotion in praying five times a day, the humility and respect they have before God, the importance of our individual relationship with God, and their emphasis on providing an example of righteous living as the best way to spread God's truth are all tenets of Islam that we can appreciate and learn from. We realized that there is a lot of common ground between Islam and Mormonism, such as their practice of giving zakat (charitable donations), their strong faith in prophets, and their belief that family relationships remain eternal after this life. It is inspiring to know that so many important parts of God's Plan of Salvation can be found in other faiths and religions across the world. We are very grateful for this wonderful chance we had to gain a deeper understanding of Islam.
