Last Friday night, the church kitchen was bustling with laughter, vegetable chopping, and cooking instructions shouted over stovetop and cutting board. The MTC enjoyed a visit from Liesel Davis, editor at Bon Appetit magazine and chef extraordinaire, who spoke with us about healthy cooking on a budget, tips to remember when grocery shopping, and easy recipes the youth can make whether on a mission, away at college, or living on their own. Here's just one of many of her tips: eggs are a great source of protein and much cheaper than meat, and you can throw almost any sort of vegetables & leftovers in your fridge into an omelet or plate of scrambled eggs. Good to know! It was these sorts of things and much more we learned from Liesel, who drew from her considerable experience as a graduate of culinary school and seasoned food writer.
After Liesel's very informative presentation, we moved to the kitchen to put some of her words into practice. Liesel demonstrated essential techniques for holding knives, chopping vegetables, cooking meat, and more. And then it was time to cook! Liesel directed the youth in a group effort to prepare steak tacos with radish salsa and queso fresco. The meal was delicious, even a little sophisticated, & - a great surprise to all of us - incredibly easy to make! Everyone left feeling more comfortable in the kitchen, ready to cook more on their own, armed with knowledge to be smart shoppers in the grocery store, and full of ideas for several healthy, delicious, and inexpensive meals.
Thanks so much to Liesel for a delicious evening!
