OCTOBER KEYNOTE PRESENTATION: Connections between the Old Testament, the Book of Mormon, and the Restoration
Our first official MTC keynote presentation took place on Friday, October 4. It was a complete success, thanks to our fantastic speaker, Christie Frandsen, and our engaged youth. Her fascinating presentation answered questions such as:
1. What Hebrew literary patterns can be found in the Book of Mormon?
2. What geographical clues in Nephi's writings have allowed us to retrace Lehi's journey through the wilderness?
3. Did the Nephites have an Ark of the Covenant in their temples, and if so, what was in it?
4. What Jewish holidays coincided with (A) Joseph Smith receiving the gold plates, (B) King Benjamin's famous address, and (C) Christ's visit to the inhabitants of ancient America?

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: CHRISTIE FRANDSEN
Christie Frandsen studied ancient scripture and Hebrew at Brigham Young University, where she also met her husband, Russ Frandsen. Following their graduation from BYU, they moved to Durham, North Carolina, where she attended Duke Divinity School while her husband attended Duke Law School, after which they moved across the country once again to settle down in southern California. Christie has dedicated much of her life to instruction in the church, teaching Institute classes for 17 years (and counting!) at the University of Southern California, Occidental College, and Glendale Community College. In addition, she is now in her 15th consecutive year as early-morning seminary teacher in La Canada, California. Somehow, she also managed to raise 11 children, one of whom happens to be your very own MTC Dad, and she has been very active in her community, particularly through Girl Scouts and PTA. We feel so fortunate to have had her as our very first keynote speaker.
OUR EXPERIENCE: Google Hangout + Christie Frandsen = a really great time!
Sister Frandsen was kind enough to try out a grand technological experiment with the NYC MTC, joining us via Google Hangout all the way from southern California. With the help of modern technology, it was just like having her with us in person!
We were initially worried that holding the presentation over Google Hangout might cause the teacher-student interaction to feel too distant, making it difficult to connect personally or feel the Spirit - but this was not at all the case! The youth were engaged, used their scriptures, & asked questions, and Christie's wonderful teaching style, honed through years of seminary and institute, had no problem making it across cyberspace. It's exciting to see how technology is helping us in the MTC program!
The Spirit was strong as we learned about the fascinating connections between the Old Testament, the Book of Mormon, and the Restoration, of which there are so many! Did you know the phrase "and it came to pass" is found in the Book of Mormon 1, 404 times, and in the Old Testament 1,204 times? Or that Alma 34 in its entirety is one long, beautiful chiasm? (Are you interested in knowing what a "chiasm" is?) Sister Frandsen's presentation was fully of these important connections and so many more! What a wonderful evening it was.
